Jonathan D. Midgett, Ph.D. is a Senior Science and Policy Advisor to Commissioner Elliot F. Kaye, the former Chairman of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Dr. Midgett has been with the CPSC since 2001 evaluating emerging hazards, describing consumer behaviors, performing age determinations and contributing to the creation of voluntary and mandatory standards. While in the CPSC’s Division of Human Factors and as the leader of the Children’s Hazards Program Area Team in the Office of Hazard Identification and Reduction, he regularly contributed expert testimony and scientific analysis of human behavior, child development, cognition and motor skills for investigations and rulemaking associated with the prevention of all types of childhood injuries including suffocation, strangulation, submersion, choking, toxic exposures, brain injuries and off-road vehicle accidents. Dr. Midgett has taught university classes on infancy, early and middle childhood, research methods, and exceptional children. His interests include drowning prevention, poisoning prevention, perceptual psychology, cognitive development, family studies and academic achievement. His research has appeared in the Psychonomic Bulletin and Review, Contemporary Educational Psychology, the Encyclopedia of Marriage and the Family, Injury Prevention, and the Journal of Children’s Health. Even so, his three children are still allowed to climb trees, paddle canoes, and ride horses.
